Microsoft Buys Esports Streaming Platform Smash.GG

Jan 26 2021

In yet another very strange move, Microsoft announced it will be buying Esports platform Smash.gg. On the surface this may look like a good move, but earlier this year Microsoft threw in the towel on another of its purchases called Mixer when it failed to make a dent in the streaming market for gaming. Why will Smash.gg be any different than the Mixer outcome? We took a look to see if we could find out….

Yes, it’s true! Mega-giant software company Microsoft has purchased another up-and-coming gaming- oriented company. Which company you ask? Are they going to take another company and try to run it in ways that don’t make sense? Not with this one gang, because Smash.gg is all about empowering eSports communities, the players, the fans, and the amazing events that get built around them all. This isn’t the stereotypical purchase for Microsoft, but it’s a smart move in diversifying their multi-access platforming agenda. Smash.gg was founded back in 2015 by amateur eSports players, and the fans that were active in the eSports community. Currently, Smash.gg has more than 6,000 event organizers for a wide range of eSports games. From the get-go Smash was built to support and build up, the active eSports scenes, with the driving focus being on the people that actually love to play the games. With a powerhouse like Microsoft behind the wheel now, and their seemingly new idea of letting, “What ain’t broke, not have to be fixed.”, Smash’s abilities to host bigger and better events is going to skyrocket. What does Smash.gg do exactly? An important question, especially if you’re new to the world of eSports and are interested in getting more involved. They provide bracket and registration functionality for online and live events, running anywhere from 16 person LAN events, to giant online tournaments with thousands of players. One of the great things about Smash.gg, is that they are constantly connecting with sponsors and game developers that want to reach out more to the actual gaming community. They’re creating the bridges between creators and players, that will help build the bigger and better games of tomorrow. The sponsor connections certainly don’t hurt either, since the era of paid gaming is definitely upon us, and gamers are able to actually able to make a living doing what they love. Though the terms of the deal have remained undisclosed to the public, the people at Smash.gg seem pretty excited to be working with Microsoft. With the extra backing that comes from such a major company, the eSports events of the future are going to become truly inspiring to behold.
